How long does a cedar shake roof inspection take?

Most cedar shake inspections take between 45 and 90 minutes depending on the roof’s size, pitch, and overall condition. Complex roofs with multiple dormers, valleys, skylights, or elevation changes may take slightly longer because each area must be examined closely.

We take the time to evaluate individual shakes, document problem areas, check for moisture issues, and inspect the structural components that support the roofing system. After the inspection, we walk you through the findings so you clearly understand the condition of your roof and what your next steps should be.

Fast enough to respect your time, detailed enough to get the whole picture.

Can you help if my insurance company is questioning coverage?

Yes — this is extremely common with cedar shake roofs in Colorado. Because many carriers have tightened their underwriting requirements, older cedar shake roofs are often flagged as “uninsurable” or “ineligible for renewal” unless a professional inspection is completed.

We provide thorough documentation including photos, condition reports, shake deterioration notes, fire rating considerations, and an outline of any repair work that could help restore insurability. If your roof has storm or hail damage, we can assess whether the issues qualify for a claim.

Our goal is to help you understand where your roof stands and what your insurance company is looking for so you can make the strongest case for continued coverage.

Will you tell me if my roof can be repaired instead of replaced?

Yes. One of the main reasons homeowners choose us is because we’re honest and transparent about whether a cedar shake roof still has life left. Many shake roofs can be safely repaired, especially if only isolated shakes are damaged or if the underlayment is still functioning.

During the inspection, we determine whether repairs will extend your roof’s lifespan or if the system as a whole is nearing failure. We look at shake condition, spacing, fastening, underlayment health, moisture intrusion, and structural concerns. If a repair is the right solution, we’ll tell you exactly what needs to be done. If replacement is a better long-term option, we’ll explain why and help you understand the costs, materials, and insurance considerations.

No pressure. No upselling. Just an honest assessment of what makes the most sense for your home.

How do I know if my cedar shake roof needs an inspection?

A cedar shake roof should be inspected any time you notice visible wear or changes in performance, especially in Colorado’s harsh climate. Common signs include curling or cupped shakes, visible splitting, missing shakes after windstorms, interior water stains, or debris buildup in valleys.

Age plays a big role too. Most cedar shake roofs in Colorado begin showing significant wear after 15–20 years due to dry air, UV exposure, and annual freeze–thaw cycles. If your roof is in that range—or older—an inspection is highly recommended even if you don’t see obvious problems.

You should also schedule an inspection after hail, heavy winds, or if your insurance company is requesting documentation. Early inspections often prevent minor issues from turning into major leaks or full replacements.

What does a cedar shake roof inspection include?

A proper cedar shake inspection goes far beyond a quick look at the surface. We examine the roof shake-by-shake to assess splitting, curling, wood decay, missing pieces, and areas where the shakes have thinned out from UV exposure. We check for soft spots, moisture intrusion, and early signs of leaks that may not yet be visible inside the home.

Underlayment exposure is a major issue with aging shake roofs, so we document any areas where felt or synthetic underlayment is showing through or breaking down. We also evaluate flashing, valleys, penetrations, and the overall structural support of the decking below.

Because cedar shake roofs are increasingly difficult to insure in Colorado, we also provide guidance on fire ratings, roof age, and whether the roof meets current insurance requirements. You’ll receive a clear explanation of the roof’s remaining lifespan and a straightforward recommendation: repair, maintain, or replace.
